Friday – Last day

Last day of prac! Three weeks has practically flown by. I cannot believe it. Surprisingly, I have enjoyed myself; I really like work processes, the use of different software and the orderly way in which files and records must be maintained. I enjoyed working with the team, who were all lovely and willing to share their time and knowledge with me. I am very grateful for my time there.

Today I managed a couple of odd jobs before I was given my evaluation and had a chat with the prac coordinator who made my time with the council possible. It is the same coordinator who was bale to fit me in with my local library two years ago. The team also had a morning tea ready for me, which was wonderful and unexpected. I was embarrassed but equally pleased!

Unfortunately my time there came to an abrupt end when my son’s school called me to say that he was ill and needed to be picked up straight away. I was really looking forward to ending on a high note. But of course my children’s health always come first.

On a lighter note, here are some photos of the lovely chocolates I was given, my pass and my desk. I look forward to having these for real soon!

To the lovely team members who aided me and gave me their time and knowledge, thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Thursday – Fourteenth day

What a busy day today! I finally, finally finished my project! Then my mentor proceeded to teach me how to do council dog and cat registrations, with a side order of desexing certificates. After a week chock a block of gift registering, this was fun and interesting. I was also moved to the team cubicles, so I was able to have a nice chat with others as I worked. Time seems to go much faster when I’m doing something fun and today was no exception. Before I knew it, I had completed 90 live registrations and I was stocked!

For afternoon tea, the manager kindly offered ice cream and strawberries with whipped cream, in celebration on the Ekka. Here’s a photo of my cup. It was delicious!

On a sad note, tomorrow is my last day and I am going to miss the lovely people I have met and the work I have learned to do. I don’t know whether I should hint that I would love to work there in the future or not. Or perhaps leave my resume. In any case, it has been tremendous fun and I have learned a lot.

Wednesday – Thirteenth day

The week is half way over and I am starting to feel a little sad that I won’t be coming back. I’ve had great time learning new things about records management and I am grateful for this prac. Today I transferred all the box numbers into the councils registering system double checking that those numbers were correct, so that in the future if one were looking for an item in the gift registry they would simply type it in and a word document will be recalled with a photo, description and a location.I’m pretty certain I know where every thing is by now and the corresponding box number and individual barcode. I’m thinking that before too soon I’ll be dreaming about these numbers and they will be chasing me down long dark corridors!

I also worked on the mail room manual and will be sending a copy for review to my mentor tomorrow morning. I’m happy I got to work on it and have nearly finished it before the week is over, I just hope that I don’t need to make too many changes as that may take more time that I don’t have.

Tomorrow, I should be doing something different as told by my mentor, maybe lugging boxes or files from one building to another. At least I’ll have some time away from those barcodes for a little while!

Tuesday – Twelfth day

I mentioned yesterday that I finished my first project, but alas, I spoke too soon. Today I spent the entire day changing box numbers (ie box 1, box 2, box 3…) to actual barcodes. I also had to register these with Grace and the council’s system. Phew! Even though I am enjoying it, this project has taken me almost three weeks to complete and I am anxious I have not given enough time to my other projects. I am disappointed too that I have not had as much time as I wanted to registering normal day to day records into the council’s system to fully understand it. Never mind, there are still three more days and hopefully I’ll be able to set this puppy free tomorrow, although I don’t want to jinx myself!

I did sneak in a little look at my manual all printed and looking official, however, I feel this too needs more work. It was a busy day today so I didn’t want to be a nuisance, perhaps tomorrow I can have a chat to other team members and see if they can offer some advice.

Monday – Eleventh day

A quiet start to the week, with the cold weather still keeping people home. However, I took the opportunity to finish wrapping all the gifts for the council. All done, hooray!

Next, I continued with the mail room manual and I must say, it is looking good. I will print out my first version tomorrow and see how it looks.

Then I registered files with Grace and performed odd jobs here and there. I was a quiet but busy little bee today. Four days to go until the end of prac.

Friday – Tenth day

Today I finished taking all the photos that I needed and registered all the documents to the council’s system. Hallelujah, I’m almost done with this project! After obtaining a rather large bundle of bubble wrapping (so tempting to pop!), I continued on my merry way. I must have wrapped a hundred items easy today and feel like a complete professional. Come Christmas time and I’ll be able to wrap pressies in no time flat!

I also worked on the mail room manual and other odds jobs. I left feeling quite accomplished! Bring on the weekend.

Thursday – Ninth day

Aside from odd jobs here and there today consisted of working on registering the council’s gifts. I can see the light! I have almost finished taking photos of everything and now I am placing everything in numbered boxes to make the process easier.

I must now make sure that everything is where it should be and that the boxes are not too heavy to shift. Once I have done this, I will need to wrap fragile items in bubble wrap. I also realised that some items are already registered, but don’t have a photo attached, so it is as matter of merging them together for a more comprehensive file. I should finish soon!
